 Madras Regiment



In the aftermath of the siege of Fort St. George Madras by the French in 1758 the East India company raised two battalions from the levies the same year.The number increased to 16 by 1765.By 1826 there were as many as 52 battalions at any one time.These had various designations:Madras Nartive Infantry,Madras pioneers and Carnatic Infantry etc.

By the close of 19th century and as a result of the reduction of the army the Madras battalion was reduced to 20.Another 17 were converted to 1st and 2nd Punjab regiments,1st/7th and 1st/10th Gurkha rifles.

Another singular factor associated with the Madras regiment:It had grenadier battalions as also a riffle corps,these were later disbanded.

  4. As also 28 MADRAS enabled a new colourful feather on the cap of the Regt when took over the President's Ceremonial Guard on May 06. It made me proud being my battalion last served before being bid goodbye to the uniform that I still adore.

  5. Instead of "Veer Madrassi adi kollu adi kollu" "Vettri vel veera vel" will be nice one as a war cry.

  6. My father was ex-service man, now I dont have parents, they died! I wanted to join army! Can I get army job, m so much interstested to join!! Jai hind

    1. You can't go directly (just because your father was a former soldier in the unit). You have to go through proper recruitment process.

  7. I want to join Indian army! My father was ex-serviceman, he did 25years in army! Now he is not there anymore! I lost my parents, Both mom & dad! I wanted to join army!! Is there any vacancies for me? I want to serve Indian army!! My father was havildar, In Madras regiment!!

      there is quota for kins of ex servicemen. Please contact the sainik welfare est in your area.
