Madras Regiment
In the aftermath of the siege of Fort St. George Madras by the French in 1758 the East India company raised two battalions from the levies the same year. The number increased to 16 by 1765.By 1826 there were as many as 52 battalions at any one time. These had various designations:Madras Nartive Infantry,Madras pioneers and Carnatic Infantry etc.

By the close of 19th century and as a result of the reduction of the army the Madras battalion was reduced to 20.Another 17 were converted to 1st and 2nd Punjab regiments,1st/7th and 1st/10th Gurkha rifles.
Another singular factor associated with the Madras regiment:It had grenadier battalions as also a riffle corps, these were later disbanded.

I am proud of being a product of the eminent regiment who was part of the same for 28 years

ReplyDeleteWaow, you must be proud of yourself
ReplyDeleteAs also 28 MADRAS enabled a new colourful feather on the cap of the Regt when took over the President's Ceremonial Guard on May 06. It made me proud being my battalion last served before being bid goodbye to the uniform that I still adore.
ReplyDeleteInstead of "Veer Madrassi adi kollu adi kollu" "Vettri vel veera vel" will be nice one as a war cry.
