HAL helicopter program was started back in November 1984 with the assistance from MBB in Germany.Although India introduced its first civil prototype,ALH(Z-3182) in 1992.But due to the changing demands of Indian army and shortage of Budget,the program get delayed for a long term followed by Indian nuclear test in 1998 which lead to US sanctions on India.

The helicopter than use the Turbomeca TM-333 2B2 engines named as Shakti engines.

This new variant of Dhruv using Shakti engine was named as Dhruv-WSI(Weapon system integrated and capable of carry anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles).
